How to Involve Children in a Child Funeral

A child funeral is a time to help your family process the grief that comes with losing a baby or young child. It is important to discuss your beliefs and traditions with a clergyperson or celebrant who has experience in this area. Depending on your child’s age and comfort level, there are a number of ways to involve them in the ceremony. A small child can be included in the service by sitting near the casket or urn. This can provide a sense of connection with the ceremony and may make it easier for them to later remember the person in their life. An alternative is to have a special table or room dedicated for children where they can color, play games and make a memory box. The room can be staffed by volunteers who are willing to listen and answer questions. For older children, you can allow them to share their thoughts or memories about the person who died at the ceremony. It is important to let them know that this is okay and not to be judged. This can help to ease their fear about talking in front of other people and makes them feel more comfortable. When the day of the funeral comes, it is important to explain what will happen in terms that your child can understand. They should know how long the ceremony will be and where it will take place, as well as who they will sit with and what people or things they will see. It is also helpful to give them a way to participate in the service such as writing their name on a message board or picking out pictures for a photo frame. Some children choose not to view the body and if this is the case for your family, be sure to allow them to make that choice. If your child wants to see the body, give them a clear explanation of what to expect and reassurance that they will not be scared or uncomfortable. If they decide to leave the room at any time, be sure to have a point person who is familiar with their needs and can help to find them. After the service, it is a good idea to allow your child to be the first one to touch and move dirt over their grave. This will be a very emotional and memorable moment for them. You can also ask other children or adults to sprinkle glitter over the headstone or scatter flower petals. It can also be helpful to have a sign-up sheet for people who would like to plant a tree or do some other type of environmental service.

Choosing Burial Gowns For Your Loved One

When it comes to laying your loved one to rest, there are many choices you must make. You’ll want to choose clothing that is respectful, dignified and appropriate for a final viewing. You may also want to add personal touches, such as a favorite piece of jewelry or an accessory that reflects your loved one’s personality. If the departed made specific requests in their advance directives, it’s important to honor those requests. You might choose to dress them in a suit, or you might opt for something more casual and comfortable. Either way, the clothing you choose should reflect your loved one’s style and personality. As you look for the right outfit, it’s helpful to think about how your loved one wished to be remembered. If your departed relative was known for his or her sense of humor, it’s perfectly acceptable to dress them in a clown wig and a brightly colored sweater. However, be sure to keep the other family members in mind when making your choice. If there’s a disagreement, try to find a compromise that will please everyone. You’ll also want to consider the state of your loved one’s body when selecting their outfit. For example, it’s best to avoid anything with metal or rubber that could cause damage to the casket and embalming process. If you’re not sure whether a particular article of clothing is suitable, ask your funeral director for guidance. A good rule of thumb is to stick with clothing that your loved one would have worn in a public setting, such as a wedding or prom. This will help guests better relate to your departed loved one and offer comfort in this time of mourning. You’ll also want to avoid anything that might distract from the solemnity of a memorial service or a visitation. While a gown is the most common type of burial attire, you can choose to dress your loved one in almost anything. Ultimately, the clothes you select should convey your loved one’s personality and bring comfort to family members and friends. If you’re not comfortable sewing your own burial gown, there are companies that will do it for you. They typically use donated wedding or prom dresses for the outer layer of the gown and a purchased, absorbing inner lining. They’ll then sew the open seams and finish the bottom hem of the dress. Once the dress is complete, they’ll pin the exterior front of the gown to the lining back piece and press them flat with an iron. Finally, they’ll sew the shoulders of the gown to match. This is a process that takes some time, but it’s an option that can be done with the peace of mind you need. For many families, this is a comforting and respectful way to say goodbye.

Places to Donate Wedding Dresses

Many brides keep their bridal gown in storage after the big day, but donating it is an excellent way to give it new life. It frees up closet space, provides a tax deduction, and gives someone else the opportunity to wear it. Plus, it’s good for the environment! According to GreenDrop, the production of clothing and textiles uses hundreds of gallons of water and accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions. So by donating your wedding dress, you’re helping to reduce the environmental impact. Some local charity shops and bridal boutiques accept used dresses for resale or donation. Many also sell accessories and other items to raise money for various causes. Local shelters that support women may also accept dress donations. Some organizations, such as NICU Helping Hands, convert donated dresses into infant burial gowns or “angel gowns” for grieving families to wrap their babies in before they say goodbye. If you’re planning to donate your wedding dress, check the organization’s website for specific requirements. Some may only accept dresses that are less than 5 years old, while others require them to be in excellent condition. Make sure to contact them ahead of time, and have your dress dry-cleaned before dropping it off. This makes their job much easier and helps ensure that your dress doesn’t get damaged during transit. One of the most meaningful places to donate your wedding dress is to Brides Across America. This organization outfits military and first responder brides for free at Operation Wedding Gown events that are held twice a year. They accept all styles of wedding dresses, as well as veils, shoes, and jewelry. The nonprofit has already outfitted more than 26,000 brides since its inception in 2008. Another place to donate your wedding dress is to a local bridal boutique that offers secondhand dresses for sale. They may also accept donated dresses and other accessories, as long as they are in good condition. Some also have a special section in their store for bridal pieces that have been worn once or twice. Lastly, you can drop off your used wedding dress at a Salvation Army location. While each individual store has different donation policies, most will accept your dress as long as it is not too shabby. They may charge you for cleaning, but they will still be a better option than just throwing your dress away.

Angel Gowns of WNY Provide Dignity and Remembrance

For families whose babies are lost in pregnancy or soon after birth, the tiny gowns stitched from old wedding dresses can provide dignity and a sense of normalcy. They are a gift of love and remembrance to those who have experienced a loss that will never be forgotten. Every year, more than 626,000 pregnancies end in stillbirth or miscarriage. That means that one baby is born dead each minute. And while there are no easy answers for the heartbreaking losses, the compassionate volunteers behind an organization called Angel Gowns of WNY are doing what they can to ease the pain. The organization received 501(c)(3) non-profit incorporation in 2014 and is now able to accept donations of wedding dresses, fabric, ribbons and other embellishments as well as monetary gifts. The founder of the group, Missy Powell, is a seamstress and a nurse, and has been working on these gowns for more than four years. “I think it’s so important to honor those babies who didn’t get to come home,” she said. “They are no less special than the ones who did.” She and her husband, a former police officer, have two children of their own and also volunteer to make the gowns. The nonprofit is a labor of love for the pair, and they spend more than 20 hours each week sewing. The Angel Gowns of WNY are donated to hospitals and other locations where grieving parents can receive them for their little ones, either as a gift or for their memorial services. “It’s an incredible emotional process,” Powell says. “But it’s something I want to do for as long as I can.” Powell is not alone in her passion. Many people across the nation and around the world are stepping up to help those who have suffered loss. The story of one of these angels is the focus of this week’s CommUNITY Champion feature on WESH 2. Tess Soholt of Golden Valley, Minn., recently retired as a labor and delivery nurse after 46 years in the field. She always remembered the joy of welcoming newborns into the world, but she never forgot the devastation that befell parents whose children died in utero or shortly after birth. After a family tragedy, Soholt was inspired to repurpose a vintage wedding dress to create an angel gown for a life that would never be. The result is Andrew’s Angel Gowns, named after the grandson who Soholt never got to meet. Soholt has a closet full of these beautiful, handmade gowns. But she needs more dresses, and she’s asking the public for their support. She’s hoping to raise $2,000 to buy more fabric and pay for shipping costs. Mountain America Credit Union is supporting her efforts with a $500 grant, and other local organizations have donated as well. The dresses must be white and have lace. Soholt is also looking for more sewing volunteers, especially those who can work with a machine.

How to Include Children in a Child Funeral

Children need special care and consideration during funeral services. A child’s decision to attend a funeral can depend on many factors, including their age and relationship to the deceased, and whether they feel comfortable seeing their body. Children who are not given the option to attend a funeral may experience long-term emotional problems, and can often express resentment later in life. When children are included in funeral services, it helps normalize the concept of death and supports them in expressing their grief. Explain what to expect. If the funeral or memorial service will include an open casket, it’s important to prepare your children in advance for what they will see. If the body will be cremated, explain that a special machine turns a person’s body into something like gray sand and is placed in a very special container called an urn. It’s also important to discuss what happens to the remains of a buried body. It’s helpful to ask significant people in your child’s life to speak or write on their behalf during the service. This can help them feel surrounded by love and support from their community, and can also provide them with more information about the deceased. If your child is uncomfortable with seeing their sibling’s body, be sure to offer a detailed explanation. If the casket will be closed, describe how their sibling is laying fully dressed in the casket with their arms folded and their eyes closed. If an urn will be displayed, be sure to explain that the person’s body is not present, and that they cannot feel cold or pain. Keep distractions handy. Children can become easily overwhelmed during funeral and memorial services, especially when there are a lot of adults crying. Arming them with activities that they can quietly work on, such as coloring or drawing, can give them a way to manage their emotions while providing a break from the loud environment. It’s also important to protect your children from fawning sentimentality; Aunt Bertha’s hugs and kisses can be distressing for a child, and may make them feel like they are responsible for your feelings. Give them the option to choose a supportive “buddy.” This can be an older brother or sister, a relative or friend, or a trusted adult from church. This person can stay with them, comfort them, and help them if they start to feel overwhelmed. Having someone to talk to can help kids feel more comfortable about going to the funeral or memorial service, and will help them understand that they are allowed to change their minds about whether they want to attend at any time. Encourage your child to participate in the funeral services in any ways they can. This can be as simple as choosing a piece of music to be played, or writing a letter or poem that will be read during the ceremony. Children are often happy to bring flowers or a personal memento that can be placed in the casket or urn.

Tips For Buying Baby Clothing

Newborns are little and fragile, so clothes should be comfortable and easy to dress. Look for clothes that fasten at the front, with wide necks or snap closures, and ties or sleeves that can be rolled up for easy dressing. Clothing should be made from natural fabrics that feel gentle against newborn skin and wash well. Avoid synthetic fabrics, which can be rough on the baby’s sensitive skin and can cause allergic reactions. Buy only what you need Babies grow quickly, and they often outgrow their clothes before the next size is needed. This creates a cycle of buying and discarding outfits that can be expensive and wasteful, especially for families who may be financially strapped after having a child. Embrace second-hand: Thrift stores and online marketplaces sell gently used baby clothes, which can be a great way to save money and reduce the amount of clothing that ends up in landfills. However, if you choose to shop second-hand, be sure to only purchase high-quality items that will hold up after washing, and look for durable, organic fabrics. Focus on basics: Start with a basic wardrobe of simple cotton bodysuits (size 0-3 months) and onesies (2-3) that can be layered with tees (5-6), reversible jackets (3-4) and dual-use bibs (4-6) to mix and match. Avoid clothing with intricate embroidery or patterns, as these can be too scratchy for the baby and may not stand up to repeated wear. Opt for neutral and organic colors: Many brands carry gender-neutral and organic clothing options, which are more affordable than more traditionally designed pieces. Also, opt for neutral-colored clothes that are less likely to be stained by food or diaper accidents. Avoid pink and blue clothes, as these are associated with the sex of a baby and can lead to biased parenting decisions. Consider the climate: Depending on where you live, it’s important to think about cold weather gear for your baby. A warm coat or sweater is a must, and snowsuits can be an excellent choice for babies who spend time outdoors in the winter. Protect your baby’s skin: A soft skull cap helps keep the heat in, while thin mittens can help prevent scratching and chaffing. Leg warmers are a good choice, too, as they can be slipped over footies and pants to help babies stay warm without adding too much bulk. New parents have a lot on their plates, and shopping for newborn clothes can be an additional burden. However, it’s important to remember that babies grow fast, and adorable clothing can pile up in storage boxes before they are worn. In addition, the chemicals found in water resistant and flame retardant clothing can be harmful to a baby’s developing skin. Dr Bell recommends using only non-toxic and organic clothing when shopping for a baby. This is the best way to ensure that your baby’s clothes are safe and sustainable for their first years of life.

Choosing Burial Gowns For a Loved One

When a loved one passes, families often make careful decisions to honor their memory and respect their final journey. For some, this includes selecting an outfit for them to be buried in. While the attire may seem like a minor detail, it’s important to consider your loved one’s personal style and funeral preferences when making this decision. Involving family members in this process can be a comforting experience, and it can also help you to choose an outfit that will best reflect their character. Whether you’re looking for an elegant black dress or something soft and subtle in pastel, there are a variety of options available when choosing burial apparel. For men, a traditional suit is a popular choice, while women tend to choose a dress or skirt and blouse ensemble. Both styles can be complemented with a formal necktie and polished dress shoes to complete the look. In the past, many families used their loved one’s own clothing to be buried in. However, as the funeral industry has evolved, more and more families are turning to retailers that offer clothing specifically for burials. While these gowns are often more expensive than using a loved one’s own clothes, they provide a peace of mind and a sense of consistency to the final arrangements. The clothing worn to a funeral is often influenced by various factors, including cultural customs and religious beliefs. If your deceased loved one belonged to a particular faith tradition, there may be specific guidelines regarding attire for their viewing and burial. If you’re unsure of what type of garment to select, it’s best to consult with religious leaders and other knowledgeable individuals in your community for guidance. Choosing clothing for a loved one’s final rest can be a difficult and emotionally charged task. To help you with this, here are some tips to guide you in selecting the right attire for your loved one’s burial service. The first thing to consider is your loved one’s personal style. What did they usually wear in life? If they were comfortable with casual clothing, you can opt for a suit or a blouse and skirt or pantsuit in a neutral color. If they preferred a more formal look, you can select a dress or a suit in a subdued shade like white or gray. If you’re unable to find an outfit that matches your loved one’s preferences, you can opt for something more unique or sentimental. Some people choose to be buried in sports jerseys, work or military uniforms, or even wedding dresses. While this isn’t a common practice, it can be a meaningful way to celebrate your loved one and show them how much they meant to you. If you’re looking for burial clothing in Elba, NY, the caring professionals at Vaughn Greene Funeral Services can provide compassionate guidance and assistance. They’re happy to discuss your loved one’s needs and answer any questions you may have. They can also connect you with the appropriate local retailers that carry burial garments.

5 Ways to Donate Wedding Dresses

A wedding dress is one of the most expensive—and sentimental—pieces of clothing a woman can own. And while some brides choose to preserve their dresses for future wear, many brides decide that the benefits of donating their bridal gowns outweigh the sentimental attachment. Donated dresses are passed on to brides in need for free or sold at a discount to raise money for various charities and causes. If you’re considering donating your wedding dress, it’s important to do your research before choosing the right charity. Many thrift stores accept donated wedding dresses, and proceeds from sales support job programs, housing, veterans, and more. To avoid contamination, thrift stores often require that donated dresses be professionally cleaned before being accepted. It’s also best to donate your wedding dress in a garment bag rather than an old box, as lace and beads can easily get ripped and stained. Founded in 2012, this nonprofit bridal store sells used and vintage wedding dresses to raise funds for dozens of women-focused charities. The proceeds from each sale help women in need, including military wives and single mothers, and the store donates more than $1.2 million to date. You can donate your dress to the store online, through its mobile app, or at one of its many drop-off locations and roadshow events. In addition to selling wedding dresses, Brides for a Cause is a great place to donate bridal accessories and other bridal items. All donations are tax-deductible, and the store’s online form makes it easy to schedule a pickup or drop-off. It’s worth contacting the store directly before donating to find out their specific donation policies. Librarian Adele Puccio knows that picking out a wedding dress can be one of the most emotional and costly aspects of a wedding, and she’s aiming to give brides a chance to say “yes” without breaking the bank. Puccio started collecting dresses in her spare time and now has a collection of more than 100 that she lends to brides-to-be at the Maurice M. Pine Free Public Library in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. As her collection of dresses has garnered more publicity, brides-to-be have flooded her with requests for dresses to try on. Her ever-growing stock is even more valuable in the current pandemic, when couples are struggling to afford their dream weddings. While some bridal boutiques donate their unused gowns to charities, Emma and Evan repurposes the dresses into infant burial or angel gowns, bonnets, and other keepsake items for families who’ve suffered the loss of a child. The organization accepts any wedding gowns, as well as flower girl and prom dresses, and even bridal accessories and shoes. Donated wedding dresses are usually passed on to brides for free, but this nonprofit also sells gowns and other bridal items to raise money for its various breast cancer-related causes. The nonprofit offers financial assistance to breast cancer patients, as well as free mammograms and other screening services for those in need.

Angel Gowns For Small Babies

A number of local groups have popped up across the country that are dedicated to making beautiful angel gowns for small babies who need to be dressed for their first and last moments, photos, memorial services or when family arrives to say goodbye. These gowns are especially needed for micro preemies and smaller newborn babies. It is a very emotional project for volunteers who sew them. The gowns are made from donated wedding dresses that have been dismantled, washed, and cut into tiny dresses for infants who pass away before birth or shortly afterward. The groups are donating the gowns to hospitals, bereavement groups, and funeral homes in the area. Each kit contains the special gown, a blanket, two hats and a heart and memorial trinket. It is an incredibly touching and thoughtful gift for grieving families. It is very difficult to lose a baby, but these angel gowns help provide comfort for families who are struggling with the loss of their little one. Having a keepsake to honor the lost child makes it easier for families to cope with the loss, and they are treasured by their parents and loved ones for generations. This is what drove a Spokane woman named Sarah Mangiaracina to start her own group, W.L.J. Angel Gowns, in 2019. She saw a newspaper column about a man from Puyallup who had donated his wife’s wedding dress to an angel gown group after losing her at seven months gestation. “He was talking about how he missed out on all the birthdays and special events that they would have had with her, and it really touched me,” she said. Mangiaracina’s group is now in six states, including Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. She says she receives about five donated wedding dresses a month, and turns them into as many as 18 unique angel gowns or angel wraps. Then she donates them to hospitals around the region and across the country. A recent delivery was to Dignity Health – St Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, California. “They are a wonderful hospital that helps so many families, and the nurses there are so caring and loving,” Mangiaracina said. If you’d like to donate a wedding dress for an angel gown, click the link here to find a group in your area. Some of these organizations also need sewing supplies, such as ribbons, lace, pinking shears and buttons. Or, ask your hubby to clean out his closet and see if he has any men’s ties that could be made into little bow ties for the boys’ gowns or wraps.
