Angel Gowns Help Families Through Loss

For families that experience the unimaginable loss of their child, a special garment can provide comfort. Known as angel gowns, the clothing is made from dresses donated by caring individuals who have suffered similar losses. The gowns are delivered to hospitals, birthing centers and funeral homes for families free of charge. The process of sewing the gowns starts with a wedding dress, which is washed and then cut down to size. The gowns are then adorned with ribbons, flowers and other embellishments to make them beautiful. The seamstresses have personal connections to their work, as many of them have lost their own children or have suffered miscarriages. NICU Helping Hands founder and president Sue Grubbs started her nonprofit organization after her own daughter, Leah, was stillborn at 29 weeks. She has seen firsthand how these gowns help families through their loss. Her group receives requests from all over the country. “It’s a beautiful way to help honor our babies who will never leave the hospital,” Grubbs said. “It’s also a way to honor the parents.” KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The loss of an infant is one of the most difficult things a parent can endure. It’s even more devastating when the loss is unexpected and so young. Mother and daughter Dawn Crippen and Krystle Black were touched by a national program that uses repurposed wedding gowns to create burial gowns and tuxes for babies who pass away at a very early age. That is how the mother-daughter duo started Little Angel Gowns. They have been working with hospitals in Kalamazoo, including Bronson Methodist Hospital and Sturgis Hospital. The pair also makes pouches for infants who weigh a pound or less, and they recently added teddy bears and ornaments to their baskets. They’re hoping to expand their service to other parts of Michigan. In addition, they have begun a partnership with Dignity Health – St. Mary’s Medical Center Long Beach. R.N. Melanie Mann, who works in the obstetrics and birthing department there, says the couple’s efforts are making an impact. “When we lose a baby it is so traumatic and heartbreaking for the family, especially when they’re only infants,” Mann said. “They want their memory of the baby to last, and these beautiful gowns are so amazing in helping that happen.” The mother-daughter duo has been able to provide more than 160 dresses and tuxes for grieving families so far. The pair is funded entirely by donations. They encourage others to help by donating their own wedding dresses, or money, through their website. They also ask people to spread the word about their mission. You can do that by sharing this article, or by simply telling your friends and family about the project. Then they can share it with their own networks. It’s a simple way to do something powerful.

How to Help a Child Attend a Funeral

If a child wants to attend a funeral, it is important for them to have the support they need. Explaining what will happen beforehand can help them feel more comfortable with their decision, and can give them a roadmap for the service: how long it will last, where it will take place and who they might see there. It can also be helpful to give children a way to contribute. If they can write a note to their loved one, or decorate a memorial card, they can feel less like they are simply passively attending the service. Especially if the service will be held in a religious setting, it is important to discuss the nature of the service with the child before they go so that they can prepare themselves for what they will see and hear. It may be difficult for them to understand that it is a service for someone who has died, but it is important that they are prepared to see people expressing a variety of feelings, including crying and laughing. Explain that their sibling’s body will be in a casket, if they choose to view it, and that it is not a horror film, but rather a special place that they will always remember them by. If they choose to be cremated, explain that the ashes can be buried, scattered or kept at home. If they are buried, encourage them to add personal touches, such as adding a small plaque with their name or birthdate, or planting a tree in their memory at the cemetery. Some families decide to bury their baby with something that was very special to them, such as a teddy bear, a favorite blanket or a photograph, or invite siblings to carry the coffin into the ceremony. This gives the child a feeling of being part of the funeral, and makes it more meaningful for them. If a child is to be cremated, it can also be very meaningful to have them be ‘brought up’ to the crematorium by being carried in on fire trucks, police cars, race car or other vehicle. Depending on the age of the child, it is often helpful to have an adult there to comfort them and keep them engaged during the services. It can be especially hard on young children to sit still for long periods of time, and having a support person there to read them stories, or play games with them, can help keep them from being too overwhelmed. It is helpful to remind the child that it is acceptable to be clingy and snuggly with their parent at a funeral, but that they should respect the wishes of other mourners who might not want to be touched. It is also good to remind them that it is okay to be quiet or play if that is how they wish to spend the service, and that it is normal to cry or laugh at different times.

The Children’s Place Offers Cute Baby Clothing For Newborns

The Children’s Place offers a variety of cuddle-worthy cute baby clothing for newborns, including dresses, bodysuits, outfits, and sleepwear. You’ll also find fun printed sweatshirts, leggings for kids, and outerwear, perfect for a day out in the sun or a cozy winter outfit for your baby boy or girl. The brand is known for their high-quality and affordable baby clothes, so if you’re on a budget, you can still build your little one’s wardrobe with these pieces. Babies can be messy, so it’s important to invest in durable fabrics that will stand up to spit-ups and blowouts. Look for clothes made from cotton, fleece, bamboo, and muslin that are soft, comfortable, and easy to wash and dry. Cotton is breathable, which means it helps regulate your baby’s temperature and keeps them warm or cool as needed. These types of fabric are also hypoallergenic, which helps protect your baby’s sensitive skin from irritants. When it comes to sleepwear, be sure to prioritize comfort above all else. Tight clothing that traps heat can disrupt your baby’s sleep and cause them to overheat. Tight fabrics can also cause rashes, so opt for cotton and other natural fibers that are breathable and soft. Synthetic fabrics are also a poor choice for infants as they contain harmful chemicals like flame retardants, petrochemical dyes, formaldehyde, and AZO dyes. These irritants can lead to allergies, respiratory issues, and even early dementia. You can never have too many onesies for your newborn! You’ll want to have a few sets of each to cover your newborn’s changing needs, as well as a handful of extra onesies for spit-ups and blowouts. Onesie sets come pre-matched and are super convenient, so you don’t have to worry about matching shirts and pants. Hanna Andersson is a trusted favorite amongst parents for their ultra-comfy and print-forward designs. They offer a variety of colors and prints to match your little one’s personality, from classic Scandi styles to playful partnerships with beloved characters and franchises. For seasonal outfits, try Caden Lane’s sailor-inspired one-pieces for baby boys and smocked dresses for baby girls. Organic cotton is a great choice for newborns as it’s naturally soft, eco-friendly, and healthy. The Organic Consumers Association explains that organic cotton is grown without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides, making it an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fabrics that can have negative environmental impacts. Additionally, organic cotton is a healthier option for your baby because it’s softer and more breathable than other types of clothing. If you’re shopping on a budget, consider buying organic baby clothes that are made from cotton and other organic materials. The Organic Consumers Association also recommends choosing clothes that are certified by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards), which ensures that the clothing is free of irritants, chemicals, and dyes. GOTS-certified products are safe for newborns and babies, as well as those with sensitive skin and respiratory conditions.

Burial Gowns and Wraps – Dressing the Deceased in Their Own Clothes

When a loved one passes away, it can be comforting for their family to dress them in clothing that was part of their everyday life. Whether it’s a football shirt or comfy pyjamas, many people choose to dress their loved ones in clothing that they enjoyed wearing when they were alive – it’s an important way to remember them in the same style as they lived. And, with the rise of green funerals, more and more families are choosing to take this approach. However, arranging a funeral can be an emotional time for everyone, and the cost of buying or making a custom outfit for their loved one can quickly add up. That’s why there are a number of organisations that specialise in creating burial gowns and wraps, allowing mourners to keep their loved one close to them while honouring their final wishes. For example, the MOV Memorial Gowns group was set up by Nicole McAuliffe to provide free burial gowns and wraps to babies who die suddenly or prematurely. It was launched in November 2015, and the group has since been able to donate over 300 gowns and wraps to hospitals, midwives and funeral homes. The group of volunteers meet once or twice a month to design, cut and sew gowns. They also hold fundraising events to raise money and supplies. They’re now able to offer a range of sizes and styles of burial gowns and wraps to suit every baby, from newborns through to toddlers and infants. And they’ve even created a special baby burial gown to help ease the dressing process and protect little angels weighing two to eight pounds. They recently made their work a lot easier after Plaskolite donated acrylic for the master pattern pieces used to make the dresses and wraps. This clear material makes it easy for uniform patterns to be cut and ensures that the finished products are a true fit. When choosing what to dress a deceased loved one in for a funeral service, it’s a good idea to consider their personality and beliefs. What did they enjoy doing? Was there anything they always wore that would reflect their interests and values? If there’s a disagreement on what they should wear, such as Grandma wanting to be dressed in her favourite baking apron and Dad insisting on his rubber waders with flies tied to them, try to come to a compromise that will help everyone understand and respect their differences. It’s worth noting that if a person is going to be cremated, any clothing with metal or plastic (like buttons or zips) will need to be removed. And any jewellery will need to be removed before the body is prepared for cremation, as this type of soft metal can’t be recovered afterward. Fortunately, if your loved one is being buried in an open casket or a vault, they’re likely to be allowed to be fully dressed, including their jewellery and other sentimental items.

Donate Wedding Dresses to Charity

Once your wedding is over, the cake is cut and you’ve hung up the last of the presents, what do you do with that perfect dress? Rather than hanging it in your closet, where it will probably never see the light of day again (unless you have an upcoming daughter), consider donating it. This will not only declutter your closet but help others in need. Plus, it’s a potential tax write-off and reduces pollution from new textile production, according to Zola. Luckily, plenty of charities and thrift shops accept dresses. But, since each one has its own guidelines for accepting donations, it’s important to do some research before you drop it off. “Select a reputable company and confirm that the charity it supports has significance to you as a couple,” Chapman says. Goodwill, for example, resells donated dresses at budget-friendly prices. The proceeds support people in your community find jobs and achieve personal fulfillment, according to their website. The store also accepts wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses that have been worn once or more, as well as jewelry, shoes and other accessories. The organization has branches in Tacoma, Seattle and Portland, Oregon, as well as a location in Mesa, Arizona. Donated gowns and accessories are sold to raise money for a variety of charities, including women’s empowerment, youth mentoring programs and more. You can donate a wedding dress or bridesmaid dresses in person or ship them following their online instructions. This nonprofit supports military and first responder brides by providing them with a free gown during its Operation Wedding Gown events twice a year. The organization has gifted 26,000 gowns to date. The charity accepts both designer wedding dresses and less-expensive lace styles. It also accepts veils, tiaras and other bridal accessories. With locations in Washington, Oregon and California, Adorned in Grace accepts used wedding dresses as well as bridal shower and bachelorette party attire. Its three dress shops in the Pacific Northwest sell the gowns to fund a host of church and community initiatives, including youth mentoring programs, outreach events, and professional counseling for victims of human trafficking. The shop has received more than 1,000 donations so far in 2019. Many bridal boutiques will take your used gowns. However, some have specific criteria for accepting them. You’ll want to check their websites for details, such as whether they require the dresses to be cleaned beforehand or if they accept gowns that were designed within the past five years. If you’re not interested in letting go of your wedding gown, you can always use it as inspiration to create something new. You can transform it into a unique home decor item, a cherished keepsake for your children or even a cute cocktail dress for the next formal event you attend. If you’re feeling crafty, you can even hem it down to make a fun jumpsuit. Just be sure to hem it properly so you can walk comfortably.

Angel Gowns for Premature Babies

The loss of a baby is a heartbreaking and often traumatic experience for any family. But if that child was born premature, the experience is all the more painful. In addition to the loss, parents are left with medical bills, grief, and a void that never seems to heal. One group of seamstresses is trying to lessen this traumatic experience for families in the United States by turning donated wedding dresses into beautiful infant burial gowns, also known as angel gowns. These gowns are given to hospitals, birthing centers, funeral homes, and directly to grieving families completely free of charge. Little Angel Gowns was started in Indiana by a registered nurse named Judi Gibson, who noticed the need for gowns in hospitals with newborn intensive care units. Her idea has since spread across the country. Many women who have lost children are able to find comfort in these gowns, and families of babies who die before making it to the hospital are also able to use these beautiful keepsakes. In Kalamazoo, Michigan, mother and daughter Dawn Crippen and Krystle Black are working to bring this program to a greater audience by starting their own chapter of Little Angel Gowns SW MI. They have already started working with Bronson Methodist Hospital, Sturgis Hospital and Borgess Medical Center. The two have a goal of reaching a total of 10 local hospitals by this fall. Both women are trained seamstresses who work on the gowns on a volunteer basis. They are also mothers and wives. The gowns are sewn from a variety of fabrics, including silk, satin, lace and chiffon. They are often adorned with beautiful embroidery and other details, such as lace flowers, tiny beads or baby hats. Some have phrases, such as “heaven’s angel,” stitched on them. Judi Gibson notes that losing a baby is like a nightmare for parents, and having these gowns available helps to relieve some of the stress and worry. Her team of volunteers has been able to provide more than 200 dresses at Riley, but she hopes to expand the program to other hospitals around the state. Edith Podge, a 66-year-old retiree from Spokane, Washington, first saw an advertisement for Little Angel Gowns in the newspaper and immediately knew she had to get involved. She has made 80 gowns so far. She has even splurged on a new sewing machine to make the gowns and adds antique buttons she has collected from thrift stores. She has also sewed bells on the gowns, inspired by the ending of It’s A Wonderful Life, in which Jimmy Stewart’s character rings the bell to signal that Clarence the angel has received his wings. The number of families who could benefit from the service is hard to estimate, but it’s important that this service be available nationwide. Anyone can help by donating a dress to an angel gown organization, spreading the word about this project, and/or donating money to help cover the cost of materials.

How to Arrange a Child Funeral

A child funeral is one of the most difficult things for parents to arrange, often in the wake of a stillbirth. For many, their whole lives revolved around the hopes and dreams of this little one. When they die, the whole world turns upside down and is a very surreal experience. The most important thing is to listen to a child’s wishes. They may say they do not want to go or that it will be too painful. Then try to help them work through those feelings and explain the reason behind the decision. It is also a good idea to discuss what the funeral or memorial service will be like and how long it will last. It is important to give children a chance to see and interact with their deceased sibling, so it is possible for them to say goodbye. It is helpful to remember that a child funeral is much like any other new experience for kids. They need time to get used to the concept of a funeral and what it will involve before they can decide whether they want to attend or not. Forcing a child to attend is not helpful and can be quite distressing. It is better to allow them to make a choice and give them a chance to prepare themselves ahead of time. This may include a visit to the crematorium or cemetery and talking about what they will see there. Some children are able to handle seeing their sibling’s body in a casket, but others may not be able to and will be very upset. Be sure to talk about what they will be able to do, such as touch the body or kiss it, and that at some point the lid will close and not be opened again. If a child does decide to attend the funeral, it is a good idea for them to stay with a familiar person or family member and not be left alone. They should also have a way to escape the situation if it becomes too much for them, such as leaving the room or going outside. If they are old enough, it can be very comforting for a child to play a role in the funeral service. This could be as simple as reading a poem or giving a speech. Alternatively, they can draw pictures, write letters or leave a personal memento in the casket or urn. This is a way for them to express their grief and will be very meaningful to them. It is also a good idea to have a snack available for them, in case they become hungry. This can help them focus during the funeral or memorial service and not become overly emotional. Lastly, make sure to have a plan B in place in case they decide to not attend the funeral or memorial service and have something special planned for them instead. This can be as low key or as extravagant as you would like it to be.

Baby Clothing Essentials

Whether you’re shopping for your own new-born or buying a gift, the right baby clothes are essential to help them grow and feel comfortable. Choosing natural fabrics that are breathable and free from pesticides, chemicals and flame retardants is a great start. Organic cotton is becoming increasingly popular as parents seek eco-friendly options. It is also softer and more comfortable for newborns’ sensitive skin. Additionally, it supports fair wages and a safer working environment for farm laborers who produce it. Aside from comfort, practicality is the most important factor to consider when choosing baby clothing. You’ll need outfits that are easy to put on and take off between diaper changes, feedings, burping, bathing and naptimes. Look for clothes with snaps and zippers that are simple to use and avoid those with buttons, which can be difficult for young babies to grasp. Bodysuits are the backbone of any baby wardrobe. These are one-piece outfits that snap between the legs and come in a variety of styles, including sleeveless and long-sleeved variants. They’re perfect for layering or pairing with pants, skirts and shorts. And because of their snap-crotch design, they’re ideal for quick and easy diapering. Rompers are another staple of a newborn’s wardrobe. These are similar to bodysuits, but they extend to cover the legs and have feet, making them perfect for playing or napping. They are usually made of a lightweight fabric like cotton and can have sleeveless or long-sleeved designs. They can be paired with shorts, skirts and pants for warmer weather or dresses when the temperature drops. For the colder seasons, you’ll want to stock up on cozy outfits that provide ample insulation without overheating your little one. One-piece sleepers and tees are great for daytime wear, while rompers or bubbles are perfect for nighttime. On chillier days, a light jacket or zip-up down snowsuit is a must. And of course, you’ll need plenty of blankets to keep them warm and bundled up! Aside from the seasonal clothes, you’ll need a variety of everyday outfits that your baby will enjoy wearing. Onesies with cute prints, bright colors and unique designs will add fun to their wardrobe. You may also want to pick up some hats and socks that can protect them from the sun or prevent cold feet. A few pairs of sneakers are also a good idea for outdoor activities. Finally, you’ll want to have a few extra sets of clothes on hand in case of spills and accidents.

Burial Gowns and Shrouds

When a loved one passes away, it’s common for family members to want to bury them in something that represents them and their life. Traditionally, people would dress their deceased in a dress or suit for the service, but nowadays families can choose from all sorts of outfits. We’ve heard of people dressing their loved ones in Harley-Davidson jackets and classic cars, but what about a dress they always wore at weddings or a sweater they couldn’t leave home without? It was in the aftermath of her son’s stillbirth that Hazel Jones started sewing clothes to be buried with babies. She uses her workshop, which used to be part of her living room, to cut down formal gowns and other items that she would otherwise donate. She found that there were services to provide burial clothes for babies, but not many outfits small enough to fit the tiniest preemies. Jones says that she has made hundreds of outfits so far and is working on even more. In addition to gowns, she has sewed tiny knitted caps, diapers and “Angel Pockets” for the tiniest preemies. She has also been able to use her sewing skills to help families of people who have died as the result of natural causes, as well as for refugees from war-torn countries. When she began helping refugee families, they often didn’t have a dress for their sons and daughters because they were born so early. So Wright started using dresses from her own collection that were blue or beige and adding ribbons to make outfits for boys. While it is fine to bury a loved one with certain accessories, it’s important to remember that these are items they will never wear again and it’s best not to add anything too heavy because it can put strain on the body as it decomposes. The funeral director will be able to advise on what is and is not suitable to bury with the casket. In addition, it’s good to consider any religious or cultural guidelines the person would have wanted adhered to at their burial. Some religions, like Catholicism, have strict guidelines about what can be worn, and some cultures prefer lighter colors for funeral clothing. A shroud can be used for both natural and green burials. It’s made from linen, which is a sustainable fiber and biodegradable. It’s also a light material that allows for a more detailed look at the body. There are other natural and green burial outfits available on the market, and most funeral homes will have a selection of these to choose from as well. Some funeral homes will offer a funeral gown that is similar to a pyjama, and this can be very comforting for the deceased’s loved ones. It will be important to talk with your funeral director about what you’d like for your loved one before they die. Ultimately, it’s up to the family to decide what will bring peace and comfort during this time.
