Funeral Gowns and Burial Gowns

If your loved one has died and you are looking at clothing options for their funeral, burial, or cremation service, there are many choices available to you. Some people choose to dress their deceased family member in something that is reminiscent of their life and personality. Some people also choose to dress their loved ones in a garment that is traditional for their culture. If you are unsure of what to wear, it is best to consult with your local funeral homes Elba NY as they will be able to guide you.

While black is traditionally worn at a funeral, there are many other colours that can be used. The most important thing to remember is that what your loved one wore in their lifetime should reflect who they were in life. If they were someone who always wore bright colors, this should be reflected in their final outfit.

For men, a dark suit is a good option. For women, a simple skirt and blouse or a smart dress are also acceptable. You should avoid clothes that are very light, as they can discolour after embalming. Also, if your loved one is going to be cremated, then it is important that they do not wear any clothes with metal or rubber as these will be damaged in the cremation process.

One of the more common choices is to have a gown made. These can be made from wedding gowns or prom dresses for those that would like a little colour. Gowns can be embroidered or adorned with beads to add a special touch. It is also a nice idea to add a collar and tie to the gown so that your loved one can be buried with their full uniform.

You can also choose to have a vest attached to the gown for an added touch of colour or style. It is important to attach the vest BEFORE you sew the lining of the gown to it. Match up the front of both the vest and the exterior of the gown along the shoulders and on the outer side seams. Pin the two pieces together and sew them with a short, quick stitch (this is called “tacking”).

Once this is done, you can turn the gown right side out, making sure there are no seams exposed except for the hemline. Press the inside seams flat using an iron. Then pin the lining to the exterior at the neck matching up the shoulder seams and back edges. Sew these seams with a 1/4″ seam. You can then sew on the ribbons if you wish and attach buttons to the vest (if applicable). If your loved one will be buried, you will want to place some personal effects in their casket with them. This could include a favourite book or a special necklace, for example. These are items that can be kept by the family for generations to come.
